So, let’s get this straight. Facebook is NOT working on a DISLIKE button. The Mashable article that everyone is circulating used a misleading headline and really poor reporting to confuse everyone, stir controversy and get clicks. According to a more clear article, they are actually working on the opposite.

Did anyone actually read the Mashable article because the headline, like so often, is entirely a LIE. I hate it when they do that. Yes, I, like so many, responded before actually reading the article. For those who want a tl;dr version, Facebook is NOT putting in a “Dislike” button, they are putting in a “Compassion” button, an entirely different thing. The headline is totally misleading on that.

Plus, the Mashable story itself is significantly misleading. Here is the only real relevant quote they published –

“”What they really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment,” he said.”

Here is a more clear article

Quote: ” The tool wouldn’t be for expressing disdain for posts, he said. Instead, it would be for showing empathy for posts that seem inappropriate to “Like,” such as news of natural disasters or loved ones dying.”

So, it is actually the OPPOSITE OF A DISLIKE BUTTON! It is an, “I love you and am sending condolences/sympathy/empathy your way” button. Totally the opposite of what the headline and even the article in Mashable claims.

So, once again, we see a “media” site distorting the truth, pretty much outright lying, just to stir controversy and get clicks.

Now that I understand what the button actually is, I think it is a good thing. Having a thumbs down button would be terrible, but having something that expresses empathy with tragedy is great. Good job Facebook, but Mashable should be ashamed. via Facebook
